When Japan's Hinata Taichi beat India's Elavenil Valarivan to the Asian Games gold in the women's 10m air rifle, the margin was 253.0 to 252.4. To a casual viewer that looks like a lot of decimals for a tiny gap. To shooters it is the whole sport. This explainer walks through how the event is scored, how the final works, and what 0.6 of a point actually means, using the real numbers from Sunday's final.
The target: a bullseye smaller than the pellet
The 10m air rifle target is one of the smallest in sport. According to the ISSF specification, the whole scoring area is just 45.5 mm across. The innermost 10-ring is 0.5 mm in diameter. The 9-ring is 5.5 mm. The pellet, from a .177 calibre rifle, is 4.5 mm wide, nine times the size of the 10-ring.
How can a shooter hit a ring smaller than the pellet? Because scoring is based on where the pellet's centre lands, measured electronically, and scored in decimals. A shot in the middle of the 10-ring scores 10.9, the maximum. A shot that just clips the 10 ring edge scores 10.0, and a shot in the 9-ring scores between 9.0 and 9.9. Each step of a full point corresponds to about 2.5 mm of distance from the centre, so a tenth of a point is about a quarter of a millimetre.
A tenth of a point is a quarter of a millimetre. That is the margin the sport is decided on.
Qualification: 60 shots, top eight go through
Every shooter fires 60 shots in 75 minutes, so the highest possible qualifying score is 654.0. The top eight advance to the final. That is why Sonam Maskar (634.1) and Elavenil (633.5) both reached Sunday's final while their teammate Vidarsa Vinod, on 630.4, did not: scores in this range are separated by fractions, and eight places are all there are.
The final: 24 shots and a ladder of eliminations
Since 2018, the final has been the same for men and women. It has 24 shots and a maximum possible score of 261.6. The finalists fire two series of five shots. That is followed by single shots, and the lowest-scoring shooter is knocked out after the first 12 shots and then every two shots after that, until two shooters remain to fire the last two shots for the medal. Scores start again from zero; qualifying totals do not carry over.
You can see the ladder in the real data. Sonam Maskar finished sixth with 167.0, which is her score after 16 shots: she was eliminated when six shooters became five. Ban Hyojin of South Korea took bronze with 230.4, the score she had when she was eliminated after 22 shots. That left Hinata and Elavenil, the last two, to fire the final two shots.
Elavenil's final, shot by shot
Reported scores for Elavenil, cumulative: 53.1 after the first five shots, 106.0 after ten, 126.9 after twelve, 148.4 after fourteen, 190.3 after eighteen, 211.1 after twenty, and 231.9 after twenty-two. At that point Hinata had 232.2, ahead by 0.3.
The final two shots decided it. Hinata scored 20.8 across them, finishing on 253.0, an Asian Games record. Elavenil scored 20.5 to finish on 252.4. Hinata's last shot was a 10.2; Elavenil's, according to one report, was a 10.1. So the gap grew from 0.3 to 0.6 in the closing pair, and the medal went to the shooter who was a fraction more accurate under pressure at the very end.
How big is 0.6 really?
Elavenil's 252.4 over 24 shots is an average of about 10.52 per shot; Hinata's 253.0 is about 10.54. Both are between 96.5 and 96.7 per cent of the maximum 261.6. The gap of 0.6 works out to 0.025 of a point per shot, which at 2.5 mm per point is about six hundredths of a millimetre of aim per shot. Put differently, two shooters hit the centre of the target almost equally well for 24 shots, and one was very slightly better.
The same arithmetic applies to the team event. India's 1,898.0 and China's world-record 1,904.2, across 180 shots (three shooters, 60 each), are averages of about 10.54 and 10.58 per shot. That is a gap of roughly four hundredths of a point per shot, which is why a single loose shot can move a country from gold to silver.
Two shooters hit the centre almost equally well for 24 shots. One was very slightly better.
What to watch for next time
If you want to follow a final, ignore the totals for the first ten shots; nothing is decided. Watch the elimination points, at 12 shots and every two after, because they concentrate the pressure. And keep an eye on individual shot scores: anything below about 10.0 is a costly miss in a field where the leaders average over 10.5. The next chance to watch is the men's 10m air rifle, where India's Rudrankksh Patil was reported to be leading qualification on 631.2 at last report, and the medal events that follow through the Games, which run until 4 October.
