“Which is the best car under Rs 10 lakh?” is one of the most common questions in Indian car buying, and one of the hardest to answer honestly, because “best” depends on what you need. This guide sorts the field by need instead of naming one winner. Prices are the ex-showroom ranges listed by Autocar India on 21 September 2026 and vary by city and variant. Safety scores come from Bharat NCAP, India's official crash-test programme, as compiled by Autocar India. Where a car's score was not in that list, this article says so instead of guessing.
How to read the two numbers that matter
Price range. The lower figure is the base variant, and it is the price you see advertised. The upper figure is the top variant, which can be well above Rs 10 lakh, so check that the variant you want falls under your budget. Bharat NCAP score. Cars are rated out of 32 points for adult protection and 49 for child protection, then converted to stars. The rating applies to the tested variants and, in the cases below, to the whole line-up as reported. Comparing scores across different testing protocols, such as Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP, is not like-for-like.
Best safety-first small SUV: Tata Punch
Rs 5.75 to 10.77 lakh, petrol and CNG. The Punch scored five stars in Bharat NCAP: 30.58 out of 32 for adults and 45 out of 49 for children, tested in January 2026. It was also India's best-selling car in August, with 21,320 sold. The main trade-off is its smaller size than a Nexon or Brezza. It suits a small family that wants a raised seating position and the strongest safety evidence at this price.
Best compact SUV to stretch to: Hyundai Venue
Rs 8.00 to 15.65 lakh. The latest Venue scored five stars, 31.15 out of 32 for adults and 44.46 out of 49 for children, tested in March 2026, the highest adult score in the group here. Only the lower variants fit under Rs 10 lakh, so it is the choice if you can go slightly above your budget for a bigger, better-equipped car. The Tata Nexon also scored five stars (29.41 and 43.83, tested in October 2024) and competes in the same space; check its current price against your budget.
Best sedan for mileage and safety: Maruti Suzuki Dzire
Rs 6.31 to 9.41 lakh, petrol and CNG, manual and automatic. The Dzire scored five stars: 29.46 out of 32 for adults and 41.57 out of 49 for children, tested on the base LXi variant in June 2025. Autocar lists its mileage at 24.8 to 36.5 (kmpl for petrol and km/kg for CNG), certified figures that real-world driving will not match. It is a sensible choice for family use and for high-mileage driving, and the only sedan in this group.
Best hatchbacks: Swift, Baleno and Tiago
Maruti Suzuki Swift: Rs 5.84 to 8.74 lakh, petrol and CNG, manual and automatic, listed at 24.8 to 35.3 mileage. It is a popular all-rounder, with sales up 60 per cent in August. Its Bharat NCAP score was not in the list this article used, so check the current rating before you decide.
